Durante su estancia en Venecia en el otoño de 1908, Monet pintó la iglesia y el campanario de San Giorgio Maggiore al otro lado de la laguna con luz de atardecer. El cielo y el agua, ambos teñidos de naranja y violeta, se funden hasta que los edificios quedan solo como siluetas. Es el más intensamente coloreado de su serie veneciana.
