Rouen Cathedral, West Façade, Sunlight
Claude Monet
One of more than thirty canvases Monet painted of the cathedral façade from a room opposite, following the changes of hour and weather. The subject is not the stone but the light breaking over it, and the thickly built-up paint becomes the texture of the wall. Showing twenty of them together in 1895 completed his idea of the series.
