The Entrance to the Grand Canal, Venice
Canaletto
At the mouth of the Grand Canal the dome of the Salute rises over the water while gondolas and barges pass. Canaletto sold views like this to English aristocrats on the Grand Tour and used a camera obscura to get the proportions of the buildings right. Venice of three hundred years ago looks almost exactly as it does today.
