The Crystal Palace
Camille Pissarro
Pissarro fled the Franco-Prussian War to London in 1870 and painted this at Sydenham in the southern suburbs the following year. The glass building on the right is the Crystal Palace of the 1851 Great Exhibition, destroyed by fire in 1936, which makes this a rare record. Strollers, a carriage and a winter sky are set down quietly.
