Terrace and Observation Deck at the Moulin de Blute-Fin, Montmartre

Vincent van Gogh

Painted
Early 1887
Collection
Art Institute of Chicago
Medium
Oil on canvas, mounted on pressboard

The observation deck beside the windmill on the hill of Montmartre where van Gogh lived, painted in early 1887. Lampposts, railings and people looking out over Paris stand under a grey winter sky. Its quiet tones, just before his turn to bright colour, make people say it does not look like a van Gogh.
