The Terrace

Follower of Canaletto

Painted
c. 1745
Collection
Art Institute of Chicago
Medium
Oil on canvas

An imaginary view in the manner of eighteenth-century Venice's Canaletto: a terrace beneath an arch looking out on canal and buildings. Such "capricci" recombined real places and were bought by English aristocrats as souvenirs of the Grand Tour. The dark shade of the arch and the bright sky divide the picture.
