The promenade on the Pincian Hill overlooking Rome, painted by Corot in the 1840s. Silvery sky, pale green and earth-coloured buildings give the soft tonality that is his signature. He kept the sketches he had made in Italy in his Paris studio and returned to them for the rest of his life.
