Arrival of the Normandy Train, Gare Saint-Lazare

Claude Monet

Painted
1877
Collection
Art Institute of Chicago
Medium
Oil on canvas

In 1877 Monet set up his easel inside the Gare Saint-Lazare in Paris and painted twelve views of trains and steam. This is one of them, catching the moment engine smoke spreads like blue fog beneath the glass roof. It is a key example of the Impressionists taking the machines and speed of the modern city, not just nature, as a subject.
