Arab Horseman Attacked by a Lion
Eugène Delacroix
A small painting from around 1849: on a rocky hillside a lion leaps onto a horse and its rider. Delacroix studied the movement of lions' muscles by sketching them at the menagerie of the Jardin des Plantes in Paris. The red robe and tawny lion break through the grey of the rocks.
