Heinrich Gogarten

Private collection

A wide winter landscape under a golden sunset: a figure walks along a snowy riverbank, a roof shows between the trees, a boat and a fence lie at the water's edge, and a flock of birds crosses the sky. Gogarten studied under Oswald Achenbach in Düsseldorf and later worked in Munich and the artists' colony at Dachau; winter was his favourite subject, and he often signed himself Henri Gogarten, as here.
