A dark mountain stream winds between snow-covered banks, drawn in 1898 in pastel rather than oil. The ripples of the current, the green edges of the ice and the pink reflection of the distant trees are all rendered with care. Thaulow was celebrated for his moving water; this picture once belonged to the Moscow collector Ilya Ostroukhov.
