Red timber buildings line the riverbank and stretch their reflections down into dark water, while turquoise ice spreads across the surface of the river. The snowy hills, the red walls and the cold green of the freezing water make a vivid contrast. Thaulow's first wife, Ingeborg Gad, was the sister of Gauguin's wife Mette; the painting was once in the Moscow collection of Sergei Shchukin.
