The Hay Wain
John Constable
A cart fording the River Stour in Suffolk, the most famous of all English landscapes. Constable painted the river of his childhood all his life, and the cottage on the left still stands. The truthful clouds and reflections astonished French painters when it was shown in Paris and helped sow the seeds of Impressionism.
