The Harvesters
Pieter Bruegel the Elder
High summer: some peasants cut and bind the wheat while others eat bread and porridge in the shade of a pear tree, and one lies flat out asleep. One of Bruegel's six paintings of the seasons, it is among the first pictures in Western art to make labour and landscape themselves the subject rather than religion or myth.
