The Boating Party

Mary Cassatt

Painted
1893–94
Collection
National Gallery of Art, Washington

At Antibes a boatman pulls at the oar while a child in its mother's lap watches him. The strong contrast of yellow boat and blue sea and the diagonals of sail and oar come from Japanese prints. Cassatt painted mothers and children all her life, and this is the boldest composition among them.
