The Umbrellas

Pierre-Auguste Renoir

Painted
c. 1881–86
Collection
National Gallery, London

Umbrellas overlap like waves on a rainy Paris street, with a girl holding a hoop and a young woman with a basket in front. The right side was painted in the soft Impressionist manner of 1881 and the left, a few years later after a journey to Italy, with firmer outlines, so two periods of Renoir coexist in one picture.
