The Circus

Georges Seurat

Painted
1891
Collection
Musée d'Orsay, Paris

At the Cirque Fernando in Paris a bareback rider stands on a white horse while a clown flies through the air, and the audience sits in tiers by ticket price. Seurat built the picture from dots of yellow, orange and blue and used curving lines to express gaiety; it was his last work, still unfinished when he died during the exhibition.
