The Angelus

Jean-François Millet

Painted
1857–59
Collection
Musée d'Orsay, Paris

At dusk in a potato field a peasant couple stop work to pray as the evening bell rings from the distant church. Millet said he was remembering how his grandmother would stop and pray whenever she heard the bell. Its humble piety made it one of the most beloved pictures in France, and Dalí was so obsessed with it that he repainted it many times.
