Two children holding a kitten, by the Swiss painter Fritz Zuber-Bühler. The subject was a Salon favourite in the nineteenth century, but the strength of this one is that the angle of the child’s fingers around the animal is not the least bit false. Skin, cloth and fur all sit at different brightnesses, so sorting the pieces into layers works well.
