The outline of the cat has all but dissolved, leaving a symmetrical pattern. Pictures like this were long presented as a record of Wain’s mental illness progressing, but the order in which they were made is not actually established and many researchers now doubt that reading. What is certain is that the pattern is symmetrical left to right, which makes it a genuinely difficult puzzle.
