The Scottish painter Joseph Noel Paton illustrating a passage from Dante’s Inferno. The two lovers drift together through hell for ever, and by setting the scene in blue moonlight Paton put tenderness ahead of punishment. An arched format dominated by a single blue-green makes it a quiet picture, and not an easy one.
