The Seasons (1897 series)
Alphonse Mucha
Mucha's second set of Seasons, drawn the year after the 1896 series, here four panels side by side in a decorative frame (the Library of Congress copy). From left: a fair-haired Spring with flowering branches, Summer reclining before a great sunflower like a halo, a dark-haired Autumn with fruit and red leaves, and Winter wrapped in white beneath snowy trees. As the four backgrounds differ in colour, sort the pieces into four groups first and build the gold frame strips between them as a skeleton.
