Acanthus

William Morris

Painted
Design 1876, made 1877–1917
Collection
Art Institute of Chicago
Medium
Cotton, twill weave with supplementary pile wefts forming cut "velveteen"; block printed

Acanthus leaves designed by Morris in 1876, the leaf of ancient Greek capitals swelled into great swirls. Overlapping leaves are shown only in shades of one red, which makes it hard, but the direction of the leaf tips helps. As wallpaper it needed more printing blocks than any other Morris design.
