Clearing after Rain on Mount Inwang

Jeong Seon

Painted
1751
Collection
National Museum of Korea

Jeong Seon's masterpiece and a National Treasure, painted in the summer of 1751 as rain cleared over Mount Inwang in Seoul. Layers of dense ink build the granite peaks, mist hangs in the valleys, and a few houses sit small at the foot of the mountain. Jeong was seventy-six and, tradition says, painted it while his lifelong friend Yi Byeong-yeon lay ill. It entered the National Museum of Korea in 2021.
