The Home of the Heron

George Inness

Painted
1893
Collection
Art Institute of Chicago
Medium
Oil on canvas

An evening marsh painted by Inness in 1893, late in life: trees in mist, a reddened sky and a single heron. Absorbed in the mysticism of Swedenborg, he sought mood and spirit rather than exact description. Soft edges make it hard, but the warmth or coolness of the colour separates the areas.
