Threshing Rice

Kim Hong-do

Painted
c. 1780
Collection
National Museum of Korea

Farmers thresh rice by slamming sheaves against a log, while a man who is clearly the landlord reclines on a straw mat atop the pile with a long pipe in his mouth. By setting the straining bodies beside the idle overseer, Kim Hong-do shows the late-Joseon countryside with a knowing smile.
