Archery Practice

Kim Hong-do

Painted
c. 1780
Collection
National Museum of Korea

An archery lesson: the instructor grips the pupil's arm to correct his stance, a man squints down an arrow to check that it is straight, and another strings a bow. Archery was part of a gentleman's education in Joseon, and this leaf shows it as everyday practice rather than ceremony.
