The Cradle

Berthe Morisot

Painted
1872
Collection
Musée d'Orsay, Paris

Morisot's sister Edma gazes at her sleeping baby through a sheer curtain. The mother's glance and the child's posture link along a diagonal, and the brushwork of the transparent white cloth is astonishingly light. The only work by a woman in the first Impressionist exhibition of 1874, it found no buyer and stayed with the family.
