Kitagawa Utamaro
A woman making up before a mirror, from Utamaro's series of Eight Views of tea-house women, around 1795. The "eight views" format came from Chinese landscape painting; he turned it into scenes of women's daily life. Yellow ground, black hair and the round mirror make simple pieces.
