Kitagawa Utamaro
The courtesan Arihara of the Tsuruya house in the Yoshiwara with two child attendants, around 1797. Patterns of lavish kimono and hair ornaments fill the frame against an empty ground. Utamaro is famous for close-up portraits of women's faces.
