The Cartwheel Galaxy
James Webb Space Telescope
A ring galaxy created about five hundred million years ago when a small galaxy plunged through the centre of a large spiral. The shock spread outward like ripples in a pond, new stars are forming in the outer ring, and the spokes joining the two rings are spiral arms re-forming. Webb's infrared view reveals the structure behind the dust.
