Divine Cat

Yamaguchi Soki

Painted
c. 1725
Collection
Naha City Museum of History

A white cat painted in the early eighteenth century by Yamaguchi Soki of the Ryukyu Kingdom. Ryukyu developed its own painting between China and Japan, and Soki studied in Qing China and brought what he learned back to Okinawa. The wide empty ground means a lot of pale pieces, but the tail and the direction of the ink strokes are reliable clues.
