The Roses: China or Bengal Rose
Pierre-Joseph Redouté
One of the plates from Redouté's "Les Roses", drawn from the rose garden of the Empress Joséphine. Stipple engraving finished by hand brought out the transparency of the petals and every vein of the leaves, and the 168 plates are still regarded as the summit of botanical art. This China rose was an ancestor of Europe's repeat-flowering roses.
