Bouquet of Flowers in a Glass Vase
Ambrosius Bosschaert the Elder
Tulips, roses, irises and carnations share one vase, though they never bloom in the same season. Bosschaert assembled an ideal bouquet from studies of each flower and painted the butterflies and dewdrops on the petals like jewels. It stands at the start of Dutch flower painting, just before the tulip mania.
