Basket of Fruit

Caravaggio

Painted
c. 1599
Collection
Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, Milan

A basket with a worm-eaten apple, wilting leaves and a dried vine stem, painted exactly as they were, teeters over the edge of a table. With an empty background and the fruit at eye level, it is counted as the first independent still life in Western art; Caravaggio said a picture of flowers deserved as much care as one of figures.
