Water Lilies

Claude Monet

Painted
1906
Collection
Art Institute of Chicago
Medium
Oil on canvas

An early canvas from the Water Lilies series painted at the pond Monet built in his garden at Giverny. Around 1906 he cut the bank and sky out of the frame and kept only the surface of the water, so lily pads, blossoms and reflected clouds share one plane. With few clues to up and down it is a demanding puzzle, but the pink blossoms are good landmarks.
