Stacks of Wheat (End of Summer)

Claude Monet

Painted
1890–91
Collection
Art Institute of Chicago
Medium
Oil on canvas

One of more than twenty-five canvases Monet painted of the grainstacks in the fields beside his house at Giverny between summer 1890 and 1891. It was his first true series, the same subject repeated across seasons and hours, and when fifteen were shown at Durand-Ruel in Paris in 1891 they sold within days. The picture is about how light changes colour: a single stack holds pink, orange and violet.
