On the Bank of the Seine, Bennecourt

Claude Monet

Painted
1868
Collection
Art Institute of Chicago
Medium
Oil on canvas

In summer 1868 the twenty-seven-year-old Monet seated his companion Camille in the shade of a tree on the bank of the Seine. The village across the river hangs upside down in the water, and leaf shadows dapple her white dress. It is often cited as a starting point of Impressionism: light and reflection observed directly outdoors.
