Bullfight

Édouard Manet

Painted
1865–66
Collection
Art Institute of Chicago
Medium
Oil on canvas

Painted after Manet saw a bullfight on his trip to Spain in 1865. He wrote of its "brilliant light, noise and blood" and, moved by seeing Velázquez and Goya in person, painted several Spanish subjects. The yellow sand of the ring and the dotted faces of the crowd form the broad areas.
