Arlésiennes (Mistral)

Paul Gauguin

Painted
1888
Collection
Art Institute of Chicago
Medium
Oil on jute canvas

Painted during the two months Gauguin spent with van Gogh in Arles in 1888. Women hide their faces in shawls against the cold Mistral wind as they cross the same park van Gogh called the Poet's Garden. Gauguin cuts forms into flat colour bounded by outlines, the opposite of van Gogh's swirls.
