Mishima: Morning Mist (Mishima, asagiri), from the series "Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road (Tokaido gojusan tsugi no uchi)," also known as the Hoeido Tokaido

Utagawa Hiroshige

Painted
c. 1833/34
Collection
Art Institute of Chicago
Medium
Color woodblock print; oban

Mishima from the large-format Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido of 1833 that made Hiroshige famous. In morning mist the shrine gate and village remain only as grey silhouettes; only the palanquin and rider in front have colour. The mist, printed from a single graded block, is the technical pride of this print.
