Madame Roulin Rocking the Cradle (La berceuse)
Vincent van Gogh
Augustine Roulin, wife of the Arles postman, holds the cord of a cradle; van Gogh painted the subject five times. He imagined it hanging in a ship's cabin so sailors would think of the lullabies of their childhood. Green dress, red floor and flowered wallpaper meet as strong fields of colour, so each piece clearly belongs somewhere.
