Madame Cezanne in a Yellow Chair

Paul Cezanne

Painted
1888–90
Collection
Art Institute of Chicago
Medium
Oil on canvas

Cézanne painted his wife Hortense Fiquet more than twenty-nine times; this is one of a group in a red dress on a yellow armchair. Her stiff expression comes from sittings that lasted hours, during which he reportedly told her to keep still "like an apple". The red of the dress and the yellow of the chair push against each other.
