Grapes, Lemons, Pears, and Apples

Vincent van Gogh

Painted
1887
Collection

Medium
Oil on canvas

A fruit still life from autumn 1887 in Paris: yellow fruit on a yellow ground, an experiment in how many tones one colour can hold. Strokes swirl around the fruit like water, and the violet grapes are the single complementary note that anchors it. The yellow still lifes of that year lead to the sunflowers of Arles.
