The White Tablecloth

Jean Siméon Chardin

Painted
c. 1731–32
Collection
Art Institute of Chicago
Medium
Oil on canvas

A still life from around 1731 by the eighteenth-century French painter Chardin: bread, a bottle, sausage and a knife on a white cloth. In an age of grand court painting he was admired for painting humble kitchen objects honestly. The smooth surface shows almost no brushmarks, so many pieces are matched by shape alone.
