The Vase of Tulips

Paul Cezanne

Painted
c. 1890
Collection
Art Institute of Chicago
Medium
Oil on canvas

Red tulips and white blossoms in a green earthenware jug, with a few apples in front. Cézanne sometimes used paper flowers because real ones wilted before he finished, which may be why these petals are so crisp. The grey-blue wall behind pushes the red blooms forward.
