The second of three versions of van Gogh's bedroom in the Yellow House at Arles, repainted from the first in 1889 at the asylum in Saint-Rémy. He told his brother Theo he wanted colour alone to express "rest, or sleep in general". Lilac walls, red-brick floor and butter-yellow bed fall into simple zones, so the piece boundaries are clear.
