Mahana no atua (Day of the God)

Paul Gauguin

Painted
1894
Collection
Art Institute of Chicago
Medium
Oil on linen canvas

Painted in 1894 in Paris, between Gauguin's two stays in Tahiti, from memory and imagination. The idol in the centre is not a real Tahitian god but Gauguin's own blend of several cultures, and the pool at the bottom dissolves into abstract pools of pink, yellow and blue. A landmark of Symbolist painting; the lower band is pure abstraction.
