A robin defends its nest while small fairies crowd around it. Fitzgerald drew the bird, the eggs and the moss with the accuracy of a natural-history plate and then set fairies on top, and it is that accuracy that makes the fantasy convincing. The composition is oval, so the outer pieces follow a curve rather than a straight edge.
