Interior with a Woman Seen from the Back
Vilhelm Hammershøi
In an empty room of a Copenhagen flat a woman in black stands with her back to us. She is the painter's wife Ida, and Hammershøi paints the silence of the room with nothing but subtle gradations of grey and white. The quiet geometry of door, wall and table was rediscovered a century later by film-makers and designers.
